Competency based maintenance training
Continually developing your team
Competency based maintenance training
To continually develop your team, the use of competency based training can play a large part. Competency based training can be used to develop the knowledge and skills of your current team members and also those of new-starters.
We work with aviation organisations to create bespoke training courses that use a variety of methods to uniquely develop their teams.
Case Studies
Large U.K. based MRO
Course required: Independent Inspection
Audience: Licensed Aircraft Engineers B1/B2
Background: We were approached to create a competency-based course that would provide engineers with the knowledge and skill competencies to carry out Independent Inspection. This course built on the existing competence of the engineers reinforcing the standard that the company wanted regarding Independent Inspection.
Our Approach: We designed the training to be completed in two main parts. The first part was delivered using the company online learning platform, where we created a number of lessons that looked at the regulations and company procedures on how to carry out Independent Inspection. We achieved this through the use of short tutorial videos, text and graphics and a short film showing engineers carrying out the Independent Inspection procedure.
The second part of the course was designed to be delivered in a classroom setting, where activities would be facilitated that would allow the engineers to demonstrate their ability to practically stage task cards, carry out a visual inspection and discuss the human factors around inspection.
Global Airline
Course required: Safety Leadership
Audience: Senior Leaders and Maintenance Personnel
Background: This company approached us and asked for help with creating a course that would develop the competence of their senior leaders and maintenance managers/supervisors in the area of Safety Leadership.
Our Approach: Working with an Aviation Psychologist, we created the course to be delivered in two main parts online, blending the online delivery with a Professional Learning Log that would be used in parallel to the online delivery – therefore taking the learning offline and into the delegates everyday role. This approach was slightly different from previous approaches since we would not be facilitating classroom-based activities and therefore needed to deliver the training in an impactful and engaging manner. This was achieved by using short tutorial videos and the Professional Learning Log.
Large European MRO
Course required: Standards and Expectations
Audience: Initially U.K. Line Engineers – expanded to Line Engineers in Switzerland and Madrid and Base Maintenance in Malta
Background: Standards across the various line stations varied and we were asked to create a course that would re-establish the company standards and expectations across the various locations. It was important that this course would be delivered using the blended learning methodology so that time in the classroom would be maximised.
Our Approach: This involved working closely with the company, initially in the U.K. to establish the standards they expected of their staff and the way they expected procedures to be adhered to. Once we had the content required to be delivered, we included three films that demonstrated the standard way for carrying out each procedure, these included the use of a Visual Alerting Kit, A320 Walk Around inspection and Tool Control. In the classroom sessions, we facilitated the delivery of a number of activities that further established the standards expected through a variety of bespoke activities – both skill-based and discussion.
